Bottom Line started in early 2023 as an online support group for people living with anal cancer in the UK.  The experience of people using the support group made it clear that Bottom Line needed to extend its reach to engage with the clinical, pharmaceutical and charity sectors so we applied to become a charity and enable us to carry out this work.  This was granted in November 2023.

Bottom Line is run and managed by people with lived experience of anal cancer and those who provide care for people living with anal cancer.

Our ambition

Anal cancer is rare - with only around 1,500 people diagnosed with the disease each year in the UK .  Bottom Line aims to raise the profile of anal cancer and improve diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.  We want to do this by making the voice of people with lived experience of anal cancer at the heart of all we do.

What is anal cancer?

Anal cancer occurs in or on the verge or margins of the anal canal, a short 4-6cm tube at the very end of the digestive system (see diagram at the end of this post). It is often, though not always, connected to the presence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) . The HPV virus is very common - most people carry it but in only a small proportion of cases does it result in anal cancer. Anal cancer is treated with a very specific protocol depending on the stage of the cancer. But normally with a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Surgery may also be part of the treatment.
